Aggressive followers and participants in U.S. politics often have strong opinions about the Downing Street Minutes. Most other Americans have not heard of or are not clear about what the Downing Street Minutes are.

Bush Declares Self “Propaganda Catapult”

“If you've retired, you don't have anything to worry about — third time I've said that. (Laughter.) I'll probably say it three more times. See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda. (Applause.)”

Bill Moyers' principled journalism is a threat to the White House and the conservative movement. Time to stand firm.

ADMINISTRATION – POLL FINDS MOST AMERICANS THINK BUSH DOESN'T SHARE THEIR PRIORITIES: A CBS poll reveals, "Six in 10 Americans don't think the President shares their priorities for the country." After a few months of Terri Schiavo grandstanding, proposing Social Security benefit cuts for most Americans, pushing for the end of the Senate's check over judicial nominations, nominating a U.N. ambassador who doesn't believe there is such a thing as the United Nations, opposing embryonic stem cell research, and standing in strong support of Tom DeLay, more Americans now recognize that Bush is not speaking to the issues they care about.

We have less than 72 hours to stop the radical Republicans from seizing absolute control to stack the courts – including the Supreme Court. We've launched an emergency petition we'll be delivering to congress every three hours until the final vote. Our allies will read your comments on the Senate floor, and every senator will know the American people are standing ready to hold them accountable. Please sign today:

Sign the Petition

Sign the Petition

This is it — they've pulled the trigger.

On Tuesday May 24th, the Senate will vote on a motion to end debate on judicial nominations, and when that motion fails Senator Bill Frist will launch the "nuclear option" — an unprecedented parliamentary maneuver to break the rules of the Senate and seize absolute control over lifetime appointments to the highest courts in the land. The vote is going to be incredibly close, and there are as many as 6 votes still up in the air — more than enough to win. We must act now.

We've launched an emergency petition and, starting Monday, we'll deliver your signatures and comments to the Senate floor every three hours until the vote is complete. As the debate rages on, Senators fighting to preserve our independent courts will read your statements from the floor of congress. And every senator, every 3 hours, will receive thousands of pages from their constituents demanding that they stand up and do the right thing.

We have less than 72 hours to win this vote and save our courts. Please sign today.

If you care about the minimum wage — and you don't want judges ruling it unconstitutional — now's the time to act.

If you care about environmental laws — and you don't want judges striking them down — now's the time to act.

If you care about your right to privacy — and you don't want the government telling your family how to live, worship, or even how to die — now's the time to act.

As the fight escalates in Congress, thousands of MoveOn members will gather outside of Senate offices and courthouses in every state in the country, staging round the clock "Citizens' Filibusters to Stop the Right Wing Power Grab." We'll also deliver your comments to all the gatherings in your state, so your words will combine with thousands of others to show the public, the media, and our representatives in Washington that we will not give up the fight for our democracy.

The right wing likes to raise the roof whenever they suspect any judicial activism on the nation's benches. Interesting, then, that they've stayed silent on President Bush's nominee Judge Priscilla Owen. Owen has a long record of radical judicial activism and overreach. She has unfailingly voted to throw out jury verdicts against corporations and denied workers recompense for job-related injuries and unfair employment practices.

Did George W. Bush Steal America’s 2004 Election?
     ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS

“In contrast to the deadly silence of the media is the silent scream of
the

data, the louder that scream grows.”
—Robert C. Koehler, Tribune Media Services

Did George W. Bush steal the 2004 election?
These documents provide readers with the evidence
needed to make up their own minds. Few debates
have aroused more polarized ire, and the bitterly
contested 2004 vote resulted in unprecedented
action by Congress. But too often the debate has
proceeded without documentation. This volume of
          crucial source materials, commentary and
          investigative reports—including the complete text
of the Conyers report, prepared by the U.S. House

free press

Yesterday, we asked you to listen to Bill Moyers' historic speech at the close of the National Conference for Media Reform in St. Louis. Many of you did. So many, in fact, that our Web server slowed to a crawl. Our apologies to those of you who couldn't download the speech.

The full transcript is available now at www.freepress.net/news/8120.

Take a few moments to read Bill Moyers' speech and then take action to save public broadcasting. More than 60,000 Free Press activists have already joined a call for the resignation of Corporation for Public Broadcasting Chairman Kenneth Tomlinson and the creation of town hall meetings nationwide to put the public back into public broadcasting.

Before we deliver their signed petitions to Tomlinson's desk, we need 60,000 more Americans to join the call. If you haven't taken action on this already, sign the petition at: www.freepress.net/action/pbs

Then ask more people to join the call for Tomlinson's resignation. Forward this e-mail to all your friends and colleagues and help protect our public broadcasting from partisan tampering.

With your help, we can turn the tide against corporate and government efforts to muzzle the quality journalism, independent viewpoints, and dissenting voices that sustain our democracy.

Act now!

Timothy Karr and the Free Press team
www.freepress.net

P.S. To learn more about building a public broadcasting system that deserves public support, read "A New Standard," the recent report from Free Press, Common Cause, Consumer Federation of America, Consumers Union, and Media Access Project at www.freepress.net/docs/pbs_report.pdf.

Frist cartoon

We have only days left until Senator Frist and GOP leadership trigger their plan to pack our courts with their unqualified, right-wing nominees.

Over the past week,  thousands of people have made our case against the GOP abuse of power -- and it is impressive.

So yesterday, Senator Kennedy took our case against Senator Frist's nuclear option to the Senate floor.

The Senator answered their baseless attacks with the truth.

Please take a moment to read Senator Kennedy's speech and selections of your comments:

PROPAGANDA – FAUX NEWS BANNED, FOR NOW: Score one for Orwell. One of the Bush administration's favorite public manipulation tools – prepackaged, government-produced video segments disguised as "news reports" – is now officially off-limits. "Congressional negotiators have agreed to bar government agencies for one year from issuing video news releases that do not clearly identify themselves as the source," Reuters reports. The measure, sponsored by Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV), was included in the emergency supplemental spending bill now being negotiated in Congress. Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and John Kerry (D-MA) have introduced a bill – the Truth in Broadcasting Act – that would make this rule change permanent.

..many people resist believing in evolution. Where does the resistance come from?

It comes, I'm sorry to say, from religion. And from bad religion. You won't find any opposition to the idea of evolution among sophisticated, educated theologians. It comes from an exceedingly retarded, primitive version of religion, which unfortunately is at present undergoing an epidemic in the United States. Not in Europe, not in Britain, but in the United States.

My American friends tell me that you are slipping towards a theocratic Dark Age. Which is very disagreeable for the very large number of educated, intelligent and right-thinking people in America. Unfortunately, at present, it's slightly outnumbered by the ignorant, uneducated people who voted Bush in.
