The unsung heroes in the Terri Schiavo tragedy---Pinellas Park local police who stood their ground and refused to turn Terri over to Jeb Bush's SS agents. Bravely the local law said NO, unless they were given a court order from the Judge! Seizing an opportunity to get maximum television coverage, bro Jeb sent the SS to spirit Ms. Schiavo out of the Hospice, but local police refused to allow it. Wonder why our illustrious mainstream media wasn't all over this story like stink on a pile? It was a blatant example of fascism at its finest, and thank God there were heroes who faced the SS and won that battle in the State of Florida! more:Barbara's Daily Buzz

Sometimes partisan politics gets overheated -- I know that as well as anyone. But when one party controls all three branches of government, and then seeks to change the fundamental principles and rules of our democracy, we need to talk about it soberly and seriously. The Republican Senate leaders have decided to fundamentally alter the role of Congress -- they want to give George Bush unprecedented power to manipulate the legislative branch and the courts. Today Harry Reid and the Democratic Senators asked us, the American people, to help them preserve the right of our elected representatives to speak their mind on the floor of the U.S. Senate. We have to act. Sign this petition, which we will deliver to every U.S. Senator, asking them to protect the right to free speech in the Senate. If they don't, it is not only their voice that will be silenced -- it will be ours: http://www.democrats.org/freespeech Here are the facts: George Bush has appointed judges to lifetime positions at a better rate than any president in nearly three decades. More than 95% of his nominees have been approved. Only ten nominees have been refused -- all because they are unqualified and out of the mainstream. But that's not enough. And on this issue, as on Social Security, it is becoming more and more obvious to everyone that the Republican leadership is out of touch with reality. More Americans voted against George Bush than any sitting president in history. And that same day, across the country, the Democratic candidates for Senate received over 4 million more votes than Republicans. Americans did not endorse the fringe agenda to dismantle Social Security. And they did not endorse dismantling the system of checks and balances that have served our country for over 200 years. Please tell your Senator to stand up for free speech: http://www.democrats.org/freespeech This is not a partisan issue -- it is an American issue. And we all must act together in order to protect our democracy. Thank you. Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

Order: The_New_Media_Monopoly_Here | We're making great strides in the fight against Big Media thanks to people like you joining together to demand a media system that serves democracy, not the bottom lines of a few giant corporations. You're in the vanguard of this important movement. And we need your help to keep gaining momentum. A few months ago, Free Press distributed 10,000 media reform action toolkits -- for free -- to help citizens mobilize for media reform. The toolkits provide easy-to-understand information on media reform and materials to help people write op-ed articles, file public comments with the FCC, challenge broadcast licenses and cable franchise renewals, and enlist others in the fight for media reform. The first batch of toolkits was snapped up within 36 hours, but thousands of activists missed out. With your help, we can raise $100,000 to put 20,000 more toolkits in the hands of local organizers and educate legions of people about crucial media issues that will determine the future of our democracy.
As we square off against well-heeled lobbyists in Washington, our only power comes from millions of people united for media reform. Become a member of the Free Press Action Fund today. Your contribution will help us arm activists across the country with the tools they need to be effective (and we'll even send you a thank-you gift). Onward, Robert W. McChesney President and Cofounder Free Press P.S. A reminder: The National Conference for Media Reform is filling up fast. Join more than a thousand activists, policymakers, entertainers and journalists in St. Louis on May 13 - 15. The early bird registration period ends on March 31. Don't miss this special event! |

Paul Krugman on the Debt-Peonage Bankruptcy Bill Scam 3/8 The Senate considered proposals Monday to raise the current federal minimum wage of $5.15 for the first time in eight years. How much was the first federal minimum wage?
A. $0.25 B. $0.80 C. $1.15 D. $2.10
BANKRUPTCY BILL – MINIMUM WAGE DEFEATED: Conservatives in the Senate defeated Sen. Ted Kennedy's (D-MA) bankruptcy bill amendment on Monday to raise the $5.15-an-hour minimum wage. Kennedy wanted to increase the minimum wage by $2.10 over the next 26 months. An alternate proposal, by Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) – who has voted against minimum wage increases "at least 17 times in the last 10 years," was "salted with pro-business provisions" and fell by an even wider margin. While Kennedy's amendment "sought only an increase in the minimum wage," Santorum expanded his proposal to include regulatory rollbacks for big business and tax breaks for the restaurant industry. Santorum's amendment also would have "changed the rules so that fewer workers were protected by minimum wage and overtime laws." New Poll Finds Bush Priorities Are Out of Step With Americans By ADAM NAGOURNEY and JANET ELDER Americans are increasingly resistant to the president's plan to revamp Social Security, according to a Times/CBS News poll. The Bush regime will not stop until they have dismantled social security and all the progress, that Democrats have made in the last 100 years. IT'S ABOUT PRIORITIES, STUPID: President Bush has no problem spending $2.1 trillion over 10 years to extend his tax cuts for the wealthy, but calls $60 billion in federal Medicaid spending unaffordable. The administration suggests states could make up for the funding shortfall by requiring "low-income people to make a co-payment before receiving Medicaid benefits." Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt tried this as governor of Utah and ended up reducing hospital admissions, clinic visits and access to prescription drugs for the state's poorest residents. In other words, the plan would "price the neediest people out of basic medical treatment and drive up the number of uninsured people." CONGRESS – BANKRUPTCY BATTERING RAM: The Los Angeles Times reports that Republican senators "continued their steady drive toward passing more stringent bankruptcy legislation Wednesday," killing a series of amendments that would have protected "lower-income consumers, especially the sick and elderly and those who fall victim to fraud or aggressive marketing by credit companies." Nine out of 10 bankruptcies "are triggered by the loss of a job, high medical bills or divorce," and the bill is being pushed by a bipartisan coalition on the credit industry dole. Yesterday Senate Republicans "beat back" a Democratic amendment to the bill aimed at protecting U.S. soldiers, frequent victims of unscrupulous loan sharks, from the most harmful effects of the legislation. Don't let the Senate pass this anti-consumer bill under the radar -- write your senators today. "How much better off we'd be as a nation if George Bush and his gang heeded the polls."
