Christian Kids Want to Know:
Why Did the Lord Jesus Have Girly Long Hair Like a Homosexual?

VALUES – THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT GETS IT WRONG AGAIN: What is it with Christian fundamentalists and cartoon characters? First there was Rev. Jerry Falwell's "outing" of Tinky Winky. Then Focus on the Family's leader James Dobson decided to attack what he saw as a pro-gay message behind SpongeBob SquarePants. The newest make-believe figure under fire from the religious right? Shrek. That's right. The uber-right Traditional Values Coalition is warning parents about the cross-dressing and transgender subtext in the movie about the beloved green ogre. The group is promoting "family values" by deciding to ignore the overall theme of Shrek – a "general message of tolerance – that outward appearances don't matter and that it's what's underneath that counts" – and instead focus on a line in the movie in which Pinocchio is teased about wearing a thong. It's time for these groups to relinquish the remote.

swift boat liars ad

Stop.This.Ad>Before.It.Starts!

The latest  ad from the Repuglican

propaganda machine ~ are you buying

this bullshit~hello in there

Swift Boat Redux

President Bush's plan to privatize Social Security by transferring risk onto the nation's elderly is proving a hard sell. Even administration officials and Republican congressional leaders "acknowledge that Bush's plan has yet to gain traction." A recent CNN/Gallup/USA Today survey of Americans showed 55 percent think the president's plan is a bad idea. And a recent poll by the Washington Post shows barely one in four Americans believe the president's claim that there's a crisis. Without public support, conservatives have turned to dirty tricks to try to sway public opinion. But no amount of deceptive advertising can mask the fact that Americans don't want this risky plan.

DIRTY TRICKSTERS BACK IN ACTION: The Swift Boat Veterans – who wreaked havoc on John Kerry's presidential campaign with untruths, innuendo and ugly rumors – are back and ready to focus their tricks on the Social Security fight. The New York Times reports the right-wing lobbying group USA Next is planning to sink $10 million in commercials and other back-room tactics to hit the AARP. ("They are the boulder in the middle of the highway to personal savings accounts," said Charlie Jarvis, the group's president. "We will be the dynamite that removes them.") In an attempt to manipulate public opinion, USA Next is rounding up all the usual suspects from the Swift Boat campaign. They've hired Chris LaCivita, the former marine paid $30,000 during the campaign to advise the Swift Boat campaign on Kerry attacks. They're looking to hire Rick Reed, a partner at the firm that put together attack ads for the Swift Boat group. Also back: Creative Response Concepts, the PR firm that backed the Swift Boat group, and Regenery Publishing, the group that published "Unfit for Command," the screed against Kerry's military service put out by one of the primary leaders of the Swift Boat vets. And Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo uncovered a link between USA Next and the United Seniors Association, a "soft-money slush fund for a single GOP-friendly industry: pharmaceuticals."

ATTACKING THE AARP: The Swift Boat vet group is already starting the attack. The AARP, a group that looks out for the best interests of seniors, has come out against the Bush plan. A new ad posted on the American Spectator purports to show the "real" AARP agenda. The weird ad shows a photo of soldiers in Iraq – with a big "X" through it – next to one of two men kissing – with a big green check. The group doesn't even pretend to provide the rationale behind the ad; clicking on the "click here for details" merely brings you to USA Next's home page, with nothing about either troops or gay marriage. Thus the ad exists just to spread the implication that AARP hates U.S. troops but loves gay marriage. (Thanks to DailyKos for finding the ad.)

Credible Evidence Emerges That Jeff Gannon/Guckert, a Gay Prostitute, Coordinated With the G.O.P. to Bring Down Former Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) in 2004 Election. Illegal Gay Prostitute by Night; Karl Rove Shill by Day.

If journalists won't point out the liars, who will? That's It In a Nutshell.

How Progressives Can Win
Help create a powerful progressive media "echo chamber"

"I'm going out telling the story that I think is the biggest story of our time: how the right-wing media has become a partisan propaganda arm of the Republican National Committee. We have an ideological press that's interested in the election of Republicans, and a mainstream press that's interested in the bottom line. Therefore, we don't have a vigilant, independent press whose interest is the American people."
-- Bill Moyers, Final PBS "Now" Episode, Dec. 17, 2004

Bill Moyers is right: A serious media crisis threatens our democracy. The conservative media message machine dominates our public discourse, undermining humanistic values and, as studies have shown, making people ignorant with propaganda masquerading as news.

It's time progressives have a media system that can compete with the right, and tell the truth. We hope you will help AlterNet fight back.

Conservatives Dominate Media

Conservatives have dramatically increased market share in American media through a vast network of Fox News, Sinclair television stations, talk radio -- Limbaugh on 600 stations alone -- fast-growing religious broadcasting, newspapers, web sites, columnists, and commentators.

Conservative media works together seamlessly to ensure that conservative messages are read, heard, and seen every day, repeatedly, by both core conservatives and the 60 million people who voted conservative in 2004.

Without the conservative media machine, George Bush would probably have lost the last election. Without a more effective progressive media machine, conservatives will probably go on winning.

In contrast to the conservatives who have invested hundreds of millions of dollars over the past 30 years, progressives have failed to sufficiently invest in an independent media structure. It's time to change this pattern and invest much more in media of our own. This crisis requires new thinking and action.

"Echo" - The Next Wave in Media

AlterNet is working with independent media partners to help create an alternative -- a powerful progressive media "echo chamber" to challenge and overcome conservative dominance in the marketplace of ideas. This is a big job, and we need your help.

DONATE NOW!

"Echoing" means collaborating to increase the reach and impact of facts and ideas that support progressive ideals and goals and undermine conservative claims. Echoing means repeating messages that communicate our values and our vision in as many places and as many ways possible.

Imagine the clear framing of a progressive vision or a hard-hitting investigative article shown on cable, satellite, and pay per view; downloaded to your TiVo; distributed on DVD; streamed on the internet; broadcast on the radio; and printed in magazines and webzines, all at the same time.

Five years ago it wouldn't have been possible to tackle the big media machine. Today, the technology revolution makes it far easier to produce quality media faster and cheaper. Meanwhile, the Air America radio network is growing and Link TV, Democracy Now and the powerful array of progressive bloggers and web sites are all finding new audiences and increasingly working together.

We Need Your Support

AlterNet will continue to provide the high quality journalism, sharp opinions, and smart analysis that you expect. But that isn't enough if we are to win in the future. We hope you agree.

AlterNet, through our Echo Chamber Project, is working to bring together the smartest tech minds in the progressive sector to help chart the new technology landscape. Our aim is for progressive media to reach more people in more different ways -- even on their cell phones and handhelds.

Can you help support our immediate projects?

Bush Signs Class-Action Curbs into Law

At a ceremony today, President Bush signed the "Class Action Fairness Act," which rewrites the rules for class-action lawsuits. In what has become the first bill to be signed by the president this year, the signing signifies the first "tort reform" victory for the right-wing and big industry at the expense of consumers and workers. Next, the Republican-dominated Congress will look to limit asbestos and medical malpractice suits.

This legislation essentially is designed "to funnel most [class action] lawsuits from state courts to the federal system in a procedural change." Business interests want this change because federal courts are generally less sympathetic to class-action cases. The legislation "was produced by the same right-wing think tanks that gave us the proposed Social Security overhaul and Medicare privatization and was marketed by the US Chamber of Commerce, which along with a coalition of businesses has spent tens of millions of dollars on the effort," according to The Nation. This legislation "will make class actions--most of which involve discrimination, consumer fraud and wage-and-hour violations--all but impossible." Click here to listen to Bush speak before he signs the bill.

The Gannon case is a prime illustration. If, during the Clinton administration, a fake reporter from a Democrat front organization, using a false name, had been exposed as attending White House press conferences it would have been a national scandal.

The president and CEO of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Pat Mitchell, announced she will not be seeking a third term earlier this week, raising new questions about the future of a network beset by partisan interference and faced with major budget cuts. The move comes less than a month after Education Secretary Margaret Spellings condemned the once-celebrated PBS show, "Postcards with Buster," because a not-yet-aired episode involved an 11-year-old girl with two mommies. That was merely the latest in the Bush administration's attempts to control content and enforce conservative themes at the station. Fearful the right wing will continue to impinge on the channel's independence, children's television advocates are calling for a new funding model based on a "national trust fund or endowment [that] would allow PBS to be free of the whims of the White House." Last week it was announced that an additional report from the 9/11 Commission—intended to be an addendum to the report released last summer—was declassified and is available through the National Archives.  While the report was slated to be released after its completion in late August 2004, the Bush administration held it for five months, blacking out and deleting information it deemed to be "sensitive."  The report does, however, explore oversights in FAA and airline policy that may have allowed the tragedy to happen. SEE THE REPORT

CIVIL RIGHTS
Bush's Skewed Priorities

With support for his Social Security privatization program lagging, President Bush has decided to focus his hard sell on African-Americans. Last month, in his pitch, he said: "African American males die sooner than other males do, which means the system is inherently unfair to a certain group. This needs to be fixed." President Bush has his priorities backwards. The issue that needs to "be fixed" isn't Social Security, it's the troubling statistic that African-American males have a shorter life expectancy than any other ethnic or racial group in America. If President Bush is serious about reaching out to the African-American community, his time would be more wisely spent addressing countless inequalities faced by African-Americans in the U.S. today, like unequal access to health care, a higher incidence of unemployment, a disproportionate poverty rate and a higher rate of deadly youth violence. Instead, he has systematically cut programs designed to help combat these very issues.

THE SOCIAL SECURITY MYTH: African-Americans depend heavily on Social Security benefits, which would be cut under President Bush's plan. The AARP found African-Americans rely on Social Security benefits for about 44 percent of their income in retirement. That number is even higher for African-American women, who are likely to rely on Social Security for 56.8 percent of their income in retirement. On top of that, African-Americans are less likely to have income from private assets; thus "Social Security is the only source of income for one in three African Americans over age 65." According to Hillary Shelton of the NAACP, "African-American children are almost four times as likely to be lifted out of poverty by Social Security benefits than our white counterparts."

INADEQUATE HEALTH CARE: African-Americans are more likely to suffer from many life threatening diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Also, "African American men and women have higher incidence of colon, rectal and lung cancer than any other group." And "black women are more likely to die from breast cancer even though white women have a higher incidence of the disease." Much of this problem is due to the inferior access many blacks have to basic health care. Based on the latest Census data, since Bush took office, the number of African Americans without health insurance has jumped by 400,000. More than one in five African Americans is now uninsured. A full "22 percent of Black Americans" today rely on Medicaid for their health care. President Bush's new budget would slash Medicaid by $45 billion over the next decade, cutting crucial services and benefits.

PERILOUS POVERTY: Lower-income Americans today are disproportionately black and Hispanic. It's a situation that's gotten worse under President Bush. According to the Census, 300,000 black Americans fell into poverty in 2002, making the poverty level among blacks today a whopping 24.3 percent. While the median income of African-American households was 65 percent of whites' in 2000, it slipped to 62 percent by 2003. And according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "unemployment among blacks hit a historic low of 7.1 percent in 2000, but has grown to 9.9 percent or higher since January 2002." One of the best ways to combat poverty is employment; President Bush, however, eliminated the Youth Opportunity Grants program, a program that gives job training to young people.

UNHEALTHY COMMUNITIES: Many people of color find attaining the American Dream tough to do when tethered to crumbling communities. President Bush, however, has eliminated important programs designed to build up communities. For example, two federal banking agencies headed by Bush appointees are trying to change laws that would cripple the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), a civil rights law prohibiting discrimination by banks against people who live in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. Bush also has proposed a 40 percent cut in federal juvenile crime prevention funds,

Fake news, fake reporter
Why was a partisan hack, using an alias and with no journalism background, given repeated access to daily White House press briefings?
By Eric Boehlert

"Thank you. Senate Democratic leaders have painted a very bleak picture of the U.S. economy. [Senate Minority Leader] Harry Reid [D-NV] was talking about soup lines. And [Senator] Hillary Clinton [D-NY] was talking about the economy being on the verge of collapse. Yet in the same breath they say that Social Security is rock solid and there's no crisis there. How are you going to work -- you've said you are going to reach out to these people -- how are you going to work with people who seem to have divorced themselves from reality?"  ~Jeff_Gannon

Bush cartoon

If it's budget time, it must be disinformation time. That's how it goes in the Bush II era. George W. Bush released a budget today that he claims is responsible, honest, and designed to cut the $400 billion-plus deficit in half by 2009. Not so. By now, you probably have heard the obvious criticisms. The budget does not include the $80 billion Bush is asking for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. (And that probably won't cover the full tab.) It doesn't account for the $1 trillion to $2 trillion that Bush needs to pay for the private investment accounts he wants to carve out of Social Security. It also doesn't recognize that several hundred billion dollars will disappear from the revenue stream when the government rejiggers the alternative minimum tax--which it must--to prevent this tax (written to apply to corporations that make creative use of loopholes) from hitting middle-class individual tax filers.

There are few secrets about Bush's budgetary shenanigans. While the military gets a hefty boost, housing, education and environmental protection gets hammered. Every advocacy group concerned with federal spending was issuing press releases today. Folks on Capitol Hill were doing the same. Senator Jim Jeffords, the Republican-turned-independent from Vermont, put out a short list of the worst of Bush's proposed cuts. Here it is:

* Environment. Cuts the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) budget by 5.6 percent from $8.02 billion to $7.57 billion, culminating in an almost 10 percent cut over two years. Most cuts come in efforts to maintain and improve the nation's clean water infrastructure.

* Veterans. More than doubles the co-payment charged to many veterans for prescription drugs and would require some to pay a new fee of $250 a year for the privilege of using the Veterans health care system.

* Health Care. Cuts Medicaid funding by $45 billion over 10 years and eliminates 28 health programs, totaling $1.36 billion. These programs range from rural hospital grants (cuts $39.5 million) to emergency medical services for children (cuts $20 million).

* Job Training. Cuts federal spending on job training by a half-billion dollars. Federal job training programs, including dislocated-worker training, will be cut by $200 million. Federal aid to states for job training, including funding to train veterans, will be cut by $300 million.

* Amtrak. Eliminates all funding for Amtrak, calling bankruptcy proceedings as the solution for our nation's rail system.

* Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP). Cuts LIHEAP by over 8 percent, from $2.2 billion to $2 billion.

* Parks. Cuts the National Park Service by 3 percent from $2.31 billion to $2.24 billion.

The Bush White House defends its cuts, claiming it is targeting programs that don't work. Could it be that the Bushies are right? That those darn bureaucrats running the clean water programs at the EPA are flushing taxpayer dollars down the drain? Perhaps. But here's the thing: if Bush is not being honest about the macro dimensions of his budget--and he's not--then how can he be trusted on the details? Short answer: he cannot. I am willing to believe waste and unnecessary spending can be found throughout government. Maybe even at the Pentagon. (Gosh, no!) But I am not willing to hand the scalpel to Bush and his lieutenants when they spin numbers and refuse to acknowledge the true budgetary problems that they have caused and overseen.

It is hard to believe that George Bush has ever read the works of
George_Orwell but he seems, somehow, to have grasped a few
 Orwellianprecepts.
The lesson the President has learned best--and certainly the one
that has been the most useful to him--is the axiom that if you repeat
a lie often enough, people will believe it.
One of his Administration's current favorites is the whopper about
America having been founded on Christian principles. Our nation
was founded not on Christian principles but on Enlightenment ones.
God only entered the picture as a very minor player, and Jesus Christ
was conspicuously absent.
In God We Trust did not appear on our coinage until the Civil War,
and "Under God"was introduced into the Pledge of Allegiance
during the McCarthy hysteria in 1954.
If  we define a Christian as a person who believes in the divinity
of Jesus Christ, then it is safe to say that some of the key Founding
Fathers were not Christians at all. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson
and Tom Paine were deists--that is, they believed in one Supreme
Being but rejected revelation and all the supernatural elements of the
Christian Church; the word of the Creator, they believed, could best be
read in Nature.

The “Emperor” has had a hump ever since he stole the office.  To anyone watching his personal appearances, “press conferences” included, it was obvious someone was whispering in his ear! The errs and ahhs, averting his eyes to the floor, and even the blatant outright statements: “BUSH: I wish you'd have given me this written question ahead of time so I could plan for it…. You know, I just -- I'm sure something will pop into my head here in the midst of this press conference, with all the pressure of trying to come up with answer, but it hadn't yet.”  It certainly can't all be attributed to that “regular guy” manufactured image!

LAST NIGHTS LIES

Iraq "is a vital front in the war on terror, which is why the terrorists have chosen to make a stand there. Our men and women in uniform are fighting terrorists in Iraq, so we do not have to face them here at home."

WHAT,NO MENTION OF OSAMA BIN LADEN?

George W. Bush knows what to do with a bully pulpit. From the days of
Thomas Jefferson to those of William Taft, the State of the Union was a
written message delivered by presidents to Congress. Woodrow Wilson
turned it into a speech. Subsequent presidents used the State of the Union
as a high-profile opportunity to promote their political agendas. Bush
went beyond that last night.

POST-ELECTION BUZZKILL: WHY IRAQ IS STILL A DEBACLE

By Arianna Huffington

Quick, before the conventional wisdom hardens, it needs to be said: The Iraqi elections were not the second coming of the Constitutional Convention.

The media have made it sound like last Sunday was a combination of 1776, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Prague Spring, the Ukraine's Orange Revolution, Filipino "People Power," Tiananmen Square and Super Bowl Sunday -- all rolled into one.

It's impossible not to be moved by the stories coming out of Iraq: voters braving bombings and mortar blasts to cast ballots; multiethnic crowds singing and dancing outside polling places; election workers, undeterred by power outages, counting ballots by the glow of oil lamps; teary-eyed women in traditional Islamic garb proudly holding up their purple ink-stained fingers -- literally giving the finger to butcher knife-wielding murderers.

It was a great moment. A Kodak moment. And unlike the other Kodak moments from this war -- think Saddam's tumbling statue and Jessica Lynch's "rescue" -- this one was not created by the image masters at Karl Rove Productions.

But this Kodak moment, however moving, should not be allowed to erase all that came before it, leaving us unprepared for all that may come after it.

I'm sorry to kill the White House's buzz -- and the press corps' contact high -- but the triumphalist fog rolling across the land has all the makings of another "Mission Accomplished" moment.

Forgive me for trotting out Santayana's shopworn dictum that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it but, for god's sake people, can't we even remember last week?

So amid all the talk of turning points, historic days and defining moments, let us steadfastly
