Demand a Plan for Securing the Peace in Iraq

Sign the petition today

This Memorial Day, all Americans will have our troops and veterans and their families in mind. Whether they served in the past or are serving now, whether in peacetime or in a time of war, all those who have chosen to serve their country in uniform deserve our heartfelt support and appreciation.

But we must also remember the responsibilities that the commander-in-chief owes to these same troops and their families. When a president sends our military into battle:

  • He owes it to them to be honest about what they are fighting for.
  • He must provide them with the best equipment to ensure their safety.
  • He must give them clear goals.
  • He must have an exit strategy so we can win the war and win the peace.

But George W. Bush has failed our troops and their families each of these counts:

  • He lied to them, to America, and to the whole world about the reasons he sent them into war.
  • He has failed to provide our troops with the necessary equipment to protect them.
  • He promised they would be greeted as liberators and underestimated the insurgency.
  • He failed to adequately plan for a post war Iraq. There is still no clear exit strategy, forcing our troops and their families to live in constant uncertainty.

Take Action

Our troops deserve better. Join us in honoring their service this Memorial Day by signing our petition demanding that President Bush present the American people, our troops and their families with a clear plan to win the peace in Iraq.

Bush's Secret Budget Cuts Exposed

Bush Secret Plan.gif

Read The Memo

BUSH’S SECRET PLAN
What Else Is He Hiding From Us?

When the White House first released the President’s new budget in February 2004, an internal Office of Management and Budget document surfaced showing anticipated cuts to most federal agencies and programs beginning in fiscal year 2006. At the time the White House dismissed the cuts, stating they did not accurately reflect Administration policy. But a May 19, 2004 White House memo obtained by the Washington Post states that federal agencies should use the proposed cuts in calculating their future budgets. Under the Bush formula, after the election many vital areas of federal spending that Bush has promoted including homeland security, education, homeownership and scientific research would face substantial reductions.

The Dirtiest Power Plants Are Plugged into the Bush Administration

*NEW* The dirtiest power plants in the U.S. generate more than their share of harmful pollution. And their parent corporations go the extra mile to generate campaign cash for President Bush.

The dirtiest facilities represent only 5 percent of the nation's plants, but cause 43 percent of sulfur dioxide, 31 percent of carbon dioxide and 43 percent of mercury emitted by the entire power sector. When the corporations that owned these plants faced EPA enforcement, the utility industry generated $6.6 million for Bush's campaigns -- and gained influence over administration policies in return.

Read entire article by Gov. Dean

Here:
The Good Doctor Speaks
by Howard Dean
Exclusive to TomPaine--Howard Dean on how to build a better America.

Big Oil contributed $26 million to the Republican Party during the 2000 election cycle, and its executives are sitting in the vice president's office and writing the administration's energy policies. The pharmaceutical companies have made $60 million in campaign contributions over the past six years, and they're rewriting the Medicare laws. The financial services industry contributed $168 million to politicians, and the administration has proposed partially privatizing Social Security. And a majority of the reconstruction contracts in Iraq have gone to corporations headed by campaign contributors to the president.

After three years, Americans have seen what happens when Wall Street, Big Oil and Big Pharma dictate economic policies. More than two million jobs have been lost; most working Americans' wages have fallen or flatlined; more than four million Americans have lost their health insurance; and the national debt has soared to more than $26,000 for every family. Meanwhile, the wealthiest 1 percent of the population has received an average tax break of more than $50,000 per person this year alone.

Even the most misguided economic policies can be reversed. But this administration's foreign policies are costing American lives, our moral leadership and our most cherished liberties.

More than a year after the president proclaimed "mission accomplished" in Iraq, fallen servicemen and women keep coming home in flag-draped coffins. Their sacrifices make us simultaneously sad and proud. But the photographs from the Abu Ghraib jail are horrible and once again make us question the reasons behind this war.

Yes, Saddam Hussein was a murderous dictator. But we were wrongly told that he was about to develop nuclear weapons, that he was in league with Al Qaeda and that he was an immediate threat to our nation and the world. And the American people and their elected representatives were denied the opportunity for an open debate based upon accurate information before we went to war.

Almost a year ago, I formally announced my candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Mine was to have been a conventional campaign, stressing the importance of offering health insurance for every family, providing every child with a healthy start and making sure that our government stayed solvent so that it could meet our nation's needs.

But the war, the recession and Americans' anger at being lied to and not listened to made my candidacy into a mass movement to take America back from the conservative ideologues, the corporate interests and the administration that secretively served them. More than 600,000 Americans—many new to politics—contributed their time, their talent and their hard-earned money to our movement.

Now, our campaign is over, but our cause continues. We've founded a new grassroots organization, Democracy for America. We're recruiting progressive candidates at every level of government, harnessing the power of the Internet, working with other progressive organizations for our common values and common goals, and raising funds for candidates for whom financial support can be the key to winning.

Goal #1 is taking back the White House. But that's just the beginning of taking back America. We're working for the day when every family has health coverage, every qualified young person can go on to college or job training, taxes are based on people's ability to pay—when the public interest prevails over the special interest and our nation is respected for the power of its example as well as its arsenal.

Together, we can keep faith with our Founders, who believed that a people who got informed and got involved could govern themselves. As Tom Paine said, "The sun never shined on a cause of greater worth."

Bush Pretends He Never Gave Secret Prison Order

Two weeks ago, President Bush appeared on Arab television claiming that he wanted to stop the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison and implying that he had nothing to do with the policies that led to them. During his appearance Bush said, "We want to make sure that if there is a systemic problem -- in other words, if there's a problem system-wide -- that we stop the practices"1. However, a new report appears to show that the President and top Administration officials may have authorized procedures that led to the abuses in the first place.

A new investigation by Newsweek "shows that President Bush, along with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Attorney General John Ashcroft signed off on a secret system of detention and interrogation that opened the door to such methods" of abuse and torture as documented at Abu Ghraib2. The secret orders were designed "to sidestep the historical safeguards of the Geneva Conventions, which protect the rights of detainees and prisoners of war. In doing so, they overrode the objections of Secretary of State Colin Powell and America's top military lawyers."

The President has repeatedly said he wants to "usher in an era of personal responsibility"3. Yet, despite these revelations, the White House has yet to admit any culpability. When asked whether a crucial Presidential legal memo4 attempting to skirt the Geneva Conventions5 helped to create the atmosphere that led to the prison abuses, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said, "Absolutely not"6.

Bill Clinton

"If we're serious about winning, we've got to realize that the true test of our commitment is ahead of us, not behind us."

-- Bill Clinton

"Good for you. Now get back to work."

When you, I and other John Kerry supporters look in the mirror, that's what we should tell ourselves. Should we be proud of the extraordinary grassroots accomplishments of John Kerry's campaign so far? Of course, we should. But, if we're serious about winning, we've got to realize that the true test of our commitment is ahead of us, not behind us.

In fact, it's staring us right in the face. We knew that the Republican attack machine was going to come after John Kerry hard. But, I have to say, even I have been surprised by how vicious they've been. They've even tried to attack the military record of a Vietnam war hero. It's painfully clear they will stop at nothing.

Let's fight back. In March, you and I helped John Kerry kick-off his general election campaign with a history-making fundraising drive. In a single month, the Kerry campaign reduced Bush-Cheney's cash-on-hand advantage from 50-to-1 to 3-to-1. And we've been gaining ground ever since.

Let's do it again. Please click here to make a secure contribution:

https://contribute.johnkerry.com

The amazing energy and commitment of hundreds of thousands of people helped John Kerry raise $55 million in the first quarter of 2004. That's more money in one quarter than any campaign in history, including the incumbent's. The Republicans thought we would let our presidential candidate be rolled over by their massively-funded attack machine. We said, "Think again."

But here's why we can't rest, not even for a moment.

The Republicans think they have absorbed an early unexpected burst of energy from our side. And now they're planning on taking the initiative back, counting on us to lose steam and settle back down.

In March, John's campaign could rely on the energy and excitement of his primary victory and, in the fall, he'll be able to count on the enthusiasm and pressure of a fast-approaching Election Day. But right now, he is relying on you and me. Let's stand shoulder-to-shoulder with John Kerry -- and let's win.

Thank you,

Bill Clinton

===============================

BUSH ADMINISTRATION MISLEADING ON PRISONER ABUSE

In an attempt to quell growing international
controversy last week, President Bush expressed
outrage at the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. He told Arab
television that he thinks "this is a serious matter"
and that "we will fully investigate" (1). However, the
President has yet to answer why no action was taken to
deal with the problem in the last six months --when
the Administration was repeatedly warned of
"widespread" abuse (2).

Specifically, The International Committee of the Red
Cross (ICRC) delivered a confidential report to the
White House earlier this year which "concluded that
abuse of prisoners in Iraq in custody of U.S. military
intelligence was widespread and in some cases
'tantamount to torture" (3). It also charged
coalition forces with "serious violations" of the
Geneva Conventions governing treatment of prisoners of
war violations that may have been encouraged by
Bush's "pre-war decision that the Geneva Conventions
didn't apply" to detainees (4). The Red Cross said it
had been aware of the situation in Abu Ghraib and
"repeatedly asked the U.S. authorities to take
corrective action," but were rebuffed ...

But "the Pentagon repeatedly failed to act". At the same time, the Red Cross was told by intelligence officials that the abuse it witnessed was just "part of the process".

ECONOMY
Still in a Hole

The April job report was welcome news, but the Bush administration's job record is still dismal and characterized by broken promises. In February 2002 – after the recession and 9/11 – the administration made projections that, by this point into his term, Bush would have created 5.5 million jobs. Instead, he has lost 1.5 million. That's a 7-million-job deficit from the administration's own projections. According to the most recent data available from the Bureau of Labor statistics, "Three years after the start of the recession in March 2001 and 28 months into the official economic recovery, 35 states still have not recovered the jobs they lost." Moreover, "49 states have seen their working age population grow faster than jobs since the recession began." Further complicating an economic rebound: the soaring budget deficit. See this week's American Progress report on the current disturbing job losses and weak recovery.

GREENSPAN – BUSH'S SOARING BUDGET DEFICIT A BIG PROBLEM: According to Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, President Bush's reckless fiscal policies threaten America's economic future. Greenspan said yesterday that the skyrocketing federal budget deficit was "a significant obstacle to long-term stability." The deficit is projected to exceed a half-trillion dollars this year. Alluding to the president's relentless pursuit of tax cuts for the wealthy even as current spending far outpaces revenues, Greenspan quipped, "the free lunch has still to be invented." He also noted, in decades past, federal debts reaching levels like the current one "have triggered serious financial disruptions, such as a falling dollar or rising interest rates and inflation" – and could do so again in the near future.

John Kerry for President

Dear Friend,

Over the past week we have all been shocked by the pictures from the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. But we have also been appalled at the slow and inept response by President Bush, which has further undermined America's credibility in the world and created new dangers for Americans in Iraq. George Bush must fire Donald Rumsfeld. But that is only a first step towards taking responsibility for his administration's failures in Iraq.

John Kerry has called on Donald Rumsfeld to resign, and today we're asking you to support him by adding your name to the call for Rumsfeld to resign here:

http://www.johnkerry.com/petition/rumsfeld.php

Help us show that America supports John Kerry in calling for Rumsfeld to resign. If 50,000 people sign this petition, that is a strong statement that will be recognized in the media -- and by the Bush-Cheney campaign. Help us get to 50,000 signers by today by forwarding this email to your friends and family.

The events of the last week are a stark reminder of the stakes in this Presidential election. John Kerry's remarks yesterday painted a striking contrast to President Bush's evasion of responsibility,

"As president, I will not be the last to know what is going on in my command," Kerry said. "I will demand accountability for those who serve and I will take responsibility for their actions. And I will do everything that I can in my power to repair the damage that this has caused to America, to our standing in the world, and to the ideals for which we stand...Today, I have a message for the men and women of our armed forces. As commander in chief, I will honor your commitment and I will take responsibility for the bad as well as the good."

Show George Bush and show the media that you support John Kerry's stand: Donald Rumsfeld MUST resign immediately. To sign please click here:

http://www.johnkerry.com/petition/rumsfeld.php

Obviously this is one of the most important petitions we will send out in the course of this campaign. Please forward this petition to EVERYONE in your address book and get the word out.

Thank you,

Mary Beth Cahill
Campaign Manager, John Kerry for President

Fall 2003 Bremer repeatedly raises issue of prison conditions with Rumsfeld and the President's inner circle according to LA Times: "Bremer repeatedly raised the issue of prison conditions as early as last fall -- both in one-on-one meetings with Rumsfeld and other administration leaders, and in group meetings with the president's inner circle on national security. Officials described Bremer as 'kicking and screaming' about the need to release thousands of uncharged prisoners and improve conditions for those who remained." (Washington Post, Graham, 5/7/04)

November 5, 2003 Maj. Gen. Donald J. Ryder files report concluding that there were potential human rights, training, and manpower issues -- system wide -- that needed immediate attention. (Washington Post, Graham, 5/7/04)

Mid-January, 2004 Bush told about the photo of abuse according to the Washington Post: "Marine Gen. Peter Pace...said Wednesday on CBS's "Early Show" that beginning in mid-January, everyone "up the chain of command . . . was kept apprised orally of the ongoing investigation." Asked if Bush "was well aware of the situation," Pace replied: "Yes."" (Washington Post, Allen, 5/7/04)

Tell John Kerry to Go Big!

Sign the Petition!

We must make certain that Senator John Kerry knows that we are longing for a leader who will inspire and call us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. He must speak not only to our minds but our hearts and souls as well.

Join the thousands who have already asked Senator Kerry to "Go Big, Ask More!" by signing your name to this petition for real change.

Don't keep this email a secret. Once you've signed the petition please forward this email to your friends, family and co-workers.

Dear Senator Kerry,

We all want to send George Bush home to Crawford, Texas, in November. He seems convinced that the way to win is by playing on our fears and dividing us. You can prove that the answer lies in appealing to the "better angels of our nature" and uniting us.

Let Bush own September 11th and the politics of fear. You should own September 12th - the spirit of generosity and community that poured forth in the aftermath of the attacks - and the politics of hope.

Offer voters a bold moral vision of what America can be. A vision that is bigger than the things that divide us. A vision that brings hope and soul back to our politics and appeals to more than voters' narrow self-interests. A vision that makes America once again a respected force for good in the world.

Instead of adopting the familiar - and failed - Republican-lite swing voter strategy, you can reach out to and inspire the fifty percent of eligible voters who have given up on voting. If you do, you will win not in a toss-up but in a landslide.

Senator Kerry, I'm ready to vote my hopes and not my fears. So please: Go Big, Ask More!

Fighting Back with Anti-Bush Freeway Signs

This web site shows what people are doing in California to fight back
by posting signs on the Freeways. Although they usually get removed
eventually, for a while at least motorists are getting to see such great
statements as: "Nobody Died when Clinton Lied," "Osama Bin Forgotten,"
"Real Soldiers are Dying in their Hummers So You Can Play Soldier in
Yours," or "Quagmire Accomplished."

"Cheney was aware of a meeting held by his staff that started a chain
of events that ended with the 'effective betrayal of our country,'
former U.S. diplomat Joseph Wilson charged Thursday in an interview with USA
TODAY... Wilson did not accuse Cheney of leaking his wife's identity or
of knowing about the leak before it was made. But he said Cheney had to
have known that his staff was investigating Wilson in a probe that led
to the discovery of his wife's job... 'The office of the vice
president, either the vice president himself or more likely his chief of staff,
chaired a meeting at which a decision was made to do a 'work-up' on
me,' Wilson wrote in The Politics of Truth.  Vanity Fair magazine reported
in January that Cheney's office denied that any such meeting occurred."
We demand the records of Cheney's meetings!

Speaking one year ago, President Bush told the world, "In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed."

Fresh off an S-3B Viking aircraft that he co-piloted but did not land and donning a flight suit, Mr. Bush strutted triumphantly aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. He stood at the podium and declared, "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended."

The latest from late night jokes

NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno":

"President Bush (news - web sites) and Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) answered questions before the 9/11 commission ... They did not testify under oath, there was no videotape, no audiotape, not even a stenographer writing down the questions or the answers; there's no record of any kind; kind of like President Bush's National Guard service ...

"Al Gore (news - web sites) has donated $6 million that he had left over from his presidential campaign to help the Democrats win back the White House. Think about it, he had $6 million left over, he only lost by what, 500 votes? Do you realize, if Al Gore had given each of those voters $12,000, he'd be president right now?"
