Saturday, May 29, 2004 Bush's Secret Budget Cuts ExposedBUSH’S SECRET PLAN When the White House first released the President’s new budget in February 2004, an internal Office of Management and Budget document surfaced showing anticipated cuts to most federal agencies and programs beginning in fiscal year 2006. At the time the White House dismissed the cuts, stating they did not accurately reflect Administration policy. But a May 19, 2004 White House memo obtained by the Washington Post states that federal agencies should use the proposed cuts in calculating their future budgets. Under the Bush formula, after the election many vital areas of federal spending that Bush has promoted including homeland security, education, homeownership and scientific research would face substantial reductions. Sunday, May 23, 2004 The Dirtiest Power Plants Are Plugged into the Bush Administration
*NEW* The dirtiest power plants in the U.S. generate more than their share of harmful pollution. And their parent corporations go the extra m The dirtiest facilities represent only 5 percent of the nation's plants, but cause 43 percent of sulfur dioxide, 31 percent of carbon dioxide and 43 percent of mercury emitted by the entire power sector. When the corporations that owned these plants faced EPA enforcement, the utility industry generated $6.6 million for Bush's campaigns -- and gained influence over administration policies in return. posted by txpoollover, 12:08 | link | comments

Big Oil contributed $26 million to the Republican Party during the 2000 election cycle, and its executives are sitting in the vice president's office and writing the administration's energy policies. The pharmaceutical companies have made $60 million in campaign contributions over the past six years, and they're rewriting the Medicare laws. The financial services industry contributed $168 million to politicians, and the administration has proposed partially privatizing Social Security. And a majority of the reconstruction contracts in Iraq have gone to corporations headed by campaign contributors to the president. After three years, Americans have seen what happens when Wall Street, Big Oil and Big Pharma dictate economic policies. More than two million jobs have been lost; most working Americans' wages have fallen or flatlined; more than four million Americans have lost their health insurance; and the national debt has soared to more than $26,000 for every family. Meanwhile, the wealthiest 1 percent of the population has received an average tax break of more than $50,000 per person this year alone. Even the most misguided economic policies can be reversed. But this administration's foreign policies are costing American lives, our moral leadership and our most cherished liberties. More than a year after the president proclaimed "mission accomplished" in Iraq, fallen servicemen and women keep coming home in flag-draped coffins. Their sacrifices make us simultaneously sad and proud. But the photographs from the Abu Ghraib jail are horrible and once again make us question the reasons behind this war. Yes, Saddam Hussein was a murderous dictator. But we were wrongly told that he was about to develop nuclear weapons, that he was in league with Al Qaeda and that he was an immediate threat to our nation and the world. And the American people and their elected representatives were denied the opportunity for an open debate based upon accurate information before we went to war. Almost a year ago, I formally announced my candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Mine was to have been a conventional campaign, stressing the importance of offering health insurance for every family, providing every child with a healthy start and making sure that our government stayed solvent so that it could meet our nation's needs. But the war, the recession and Americans' anger at being lied to and not listened to made my candidacy into a mass movement to take America back from the conservative ideologues, the corporate interests and the administration that secretively served them. More than 600,000 Americans—many new to politics—contributed their time, their talent and their hard-earned money to our movement. Now, our campaign is over, but our cause continues. We've founded a new grassroots organization, Democracy for America. We're recruiting progressive candidates at every level of government, harnessing the power of the Internet, working with other progressive organizations for our common values and common goals, and raising funds for candidates for whom financial support can be the key to winning. Goal #1 is taking back the White House. But that's just the beginning of taking back America. We're working for the day when every family has health coverage, every qualified young person can go on to college or job training, taxes are based on people's ability to pay—when the public interest prevails over the special interest and our nation is respected for the power of its example as well as its arsenal. Together, we can keep faith with our Founders, who believed that a people who got informed and got involved could govern themselves. As Tom Paine said, "The sun never shined on a cause of greater worth." posted by txpoollover, 18:08 | link | comments
Wednesday, May 19, 2004 Bush Pretends He Never Gave Secret Prison OrderTwo weeks ago, President Bush appeared on Arab television claiming that he wanted to stop the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison and implying that he had nothing to do with the policies that led to them. During his appearance Bush said, "We want to make sure that if there is a systemic problem -- in other words, if there's a problem system-wide -- that we stop the practices"1. However, a new report appears to show that the President and top Administration officials may have authorized procedures that led to the abuses in the first place. A new investigation by Newsweek "shows that President Bush, along with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Attorney General John Ashcroft signed off on a secret system of detention and interrogation that opened the door to such methods" of abuse and torture as documented at Abu Ghraib2. The secret orders were designed "to sidestep the historical safeguards of the Geneva Conventions, which protect the rights of detainees and prisoners of war. In doing so, they overrode the objections of Secretary of State Colin Powell and America's top military lawyers." The President has repeatedly said he wants to "usher in an era of personal responsibility"3. Yet, despite these revelations, the White House has yet to admit any culpability. When asked whether a crucial Presidential legal memo4 attempting to skirt the Geneva Conventions5 helped to create the atmosphere that led to the prison abuses, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said, "Absolutely not"6. Please forward this email and ask a friend to contribute. "If we're serious about winning, we've got to realize that the true test of our commitment is ahead of us, not behind us."
"Good for you. Now get back to work."
When you, I and other John Kerry supporters look in the mirror, that's what we should tell ourselves. Should we be proud of the extraordinary grassroots accomplishments of John Kerry's campaign so far? Of course, we should. But, if we're serious about winning, we've got to realize that the true test of our commitment is ahead of us, not behind us.
In fact, it's staring us right in the face. We knew that the Republican attack machine was going to come after John Kerry hard. But, I have to say, even I have been surprised by how vicious they've been. They've even tried to attack the military record of a Vietnam war hero. It's painfully clear they will stop at nothing.
Let's fight back. In March, you and I helped John Kerry kick-off his general election campaign with a history-making fundraising drive. In a single month, the Kerry campaign reduced Bush-Cheney's cash-on-hand advantage from 50-to-1 to 3-to-1. And we've been gaining ground ever since.
Let's do it again. Please click here to make a secure contribution:

The amazing energy and commitment of hundreds of thousands of people helped John Kerry raise $55 million in the first quarter of 2004. That's more money in one quarter than any campaign in history, including the incumbent's. The Republicans thought we would let our presidential candidate be rolled over by their massively-funded attack machine. We said, "Think again."
But here's why we can't rest, not even for a moment.
The Republicans think they have absorbed an early unexpected burst of energy from our side. And now they're planning on taking the initiative back, counting on us to lose steam and settle back down.
In March, John's campaign could rely on the energy and excitement of his primary victory and, in the fall, he'll be able to count on the enthusiasm and pressure of a fast-approaching Election Day. But right now, he is relying on you and me. Let's stand shoulder-to-shoulder with John Kerry -- and let's win.
Thank you,

Sunday, May 09, 2004 The April job report was welcome news, but the Bush administration's job record is still dismal and characterized by broken promises. In February 2002 – after the recession and 9/11 – the administration made projections that, by this point into his term, Bush would have created 5.5 million jobs. Instead, he has lost 1.5 million. That's a 7-million-job deficit from the administration's own projections. According to the most recent data available from the Bureau of Labor statistics, "Three years after the start of the recession in March 2001 and 28 months into the official economic recovery, 35 states still have not recovered the jobs they lost." Moreover, "49 states have seen their working age population grow faster than jobs since the recession began." Further complicating an economic rebound: the soaring budget deficit. See this week's American Progress report on the current disturbing job losses and weak recovery. GREENSPAN – BUSH'S SOARING BUDGET DEFICIT A BIG PROBLEM: According to Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, President Bush's reckless fiscal policies threaten America's economic future. Greenspan said yesterday that the skyrocketing federal budget deficit was "a significant obstacle to long-term stability." The deficit is projected to exceed a half-trillion dollars this year. Alluding to the president's relentless pursuit of tax cuts for the wealthy even as current spending far outpaces revenues, Greenspan quipped, "the free lunch has still to be invented." He also noted, in decades past, federal debts reaching levels like the current one "have triggered serious financial disruptions, such as a falling dollar or rising interest rates and inflation" – and could do so again in the near future. posted by txpoollover, 09:02 | link | comments
